Most people know the benefits of yoga, but are you enjoying those benefits? How do we make it a consistent part of our daily routine?
The key is habit formation.
By following scientifically proven methods, you can turn yoga into a daily habit and enjoy the numerous benefits it has to offer.
Here are 7 proven tips I’ll share with you on how you can turn yoga into a daily habit:
First, set your intention right from the start
A goal describes what you want to do in the future. It focuses on external accomplishments and is something you can ideally measure, and clearly check off a list: “Go running” or “Learn to make homemade pasta.”
An intention describes how you want to feel. Its focus is internal – on your relationship with yourself. Start out here by setting your intention. An intention’s purpose is to flow through our every word, thought and deed. By setting an intention to practice yoga for reasons you know, you will actively choose to empower yourself to make a real positive change in your life.
1- Make practice easy:
One of the most important things to remember is to make your yoga practice easy. Start with small, manageable goals, such as practicing for just five minutes a day. As you become more comfortable with the practice, you can gradually increase the time.
Focus on small actions that you can do in less than thirty seconds. You will quickly wire in new habits, and then they will grow naturally. The idea is you do these things every day, and you build quickly on this.
This is the way we make our new habit nice and easy mentally and physically. Think of your new habit like a new little baby. We need to nurture and grow it. You don’t expect a new baby to get up and make its own dinner! We take care of it and help it with every step along the way.
2- Control your environment:
Your environment plays a big role in forming habits. Try to find a quiet and comfortable space where you can practice yoga without interruptions. This will make it easier to focus on your practice and make it a daily habit.
3- Reward your actions:
A good way to make yoga a daily habit is to reward yourself for your actions. This could be something small like a favorite snack or something bigger like a yoga retreat. Whatever it is, make sure it is something that you look forward to.
4- Create a schedule:
Create a consistent schedule for practicing yoga. This will help you to establish a routine and make it a part of your daily routine.
5- Remind yourself:
Set reminders for yourself to practice yoga. This can be an alarm on your phone, a sticky note on your mirror, or whatever works for you.
6- Find a yoga buddy:
Find a yoga buddy to practice with. This will make it more fun and also create accountability. Pick someone for your accountability person that won’t sugar coat it, and that will be kind of stern with you.
7- Make it a part of your routine:
Incorporate yoga into your daily routine. For example, you can practice yoga in the morning before starting your day or in the evening before going to bed.
